Abu Dhabi Cruise Port Guide
Cruise ships dock at Port Zayed, a modern and well-equipped facility. The cruise terminal offers various services including restaurants, retail shops, foreign currency exchange, and airline city check-in. Its unique architecture draws inspiration from local heritage, featuring a lattice-work roof based on the Ghaf tree and wooden beams reminiscent of traditional dhows. The city center is approximately 4 miles from the port. Please note that walking within the port area is not permitted; free shuttle buses are provided to the port entrance, though there is little of interest there. Abu Dhabi has undergone a dramatic transformation from a small fishing village into one of the world's wealthiest cities. It blends ultra-modern sophistication with traditional Arab mystique, offering a unique experience for visitors. The city is renowned for its lush green spaces, wide boulevards, and impressive skyscrapers. Abu Dhabi is exceptionally safe and clean.
Getting Around from the Port
Due to the heat and spread-out attractions, walking is not recommended for exploring Abu Dhabi.
- Taxis: Metered taxis are readily available right outside the terminal. They are an excellent and affordable way to get around; always ensure the driver switches on the meter. A taxi to the city center or major attractions like the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque will be a reasonable fare.
- Hop-on/Hop-off Bus: The Big Bus service operates directly from the cruise terminal, offering a convenient way to see multiple sights. The Marina Mall is a major stop on this route.
- Shuttles: Complimentary shuttle buses are provided by the WTC Souk and Mall directly from the terminal, offering easy access to these shopping destinations.
- Travel Times (estimated by taxi):
- City Center / Heritage Village: 10-15 minutes
- Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque: 15-20 minutes
- Marina Mall: 15-20 minutes
- Yas Island (Ferrari World, Yas Mall): 30-40 minutes
Attractions and Activities
With 8-10 hours in port, focus on a few key attractions. Taxis offer flexibility for independent exploration, or you can compare cruise line excursions with options from providers like GetYourGuide and Viator.
- Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque: A truly spectacular architectural marvel and a must-visit. Ladies are required to cover up; bring a valid ID (your cruise card is sufficient) to borrow an Abaya (cover dress) at the entrance. Men must wear long trousers. Allow at least 2-3 hours for travel and your visit.
- The Corniche & Marina Mall: Enjoy a drive along the beautiful Corniche, a park-lined coastal boulevard. Head to Marina Mall, a major stop for the Hop-on/Hop-off bus, and take the elevator to the top for panoramic views of Abu Dhabi's dynamic skyline. A coffee shop at the top offers free WiFi.
- Heritage Village: Located in the city center, this village provides insight into traditional Bedouin life, local crafts, and historical displays on agriculture, fishing, and trading.
- Yas Island (Ferrari World & Yas Mall): For those interested in theme parks and extensive shopping, Yas Island is home to Ferrari World and Yas Mall. Opened in 2014, Yas Mall is one of the world's largest shopping centers and is connected to Ferrari World, featuring the first Lego store in the UAE. This is a longer trip from the port, best suited if you prioritize these attractions.
- Cultural Center: Explore this complex built in traditional Arabian-Islamic architecture, featuring a library, theater, and exhibition spaces.
Shopping
- Central Souq: Located from Hamdan Street towards the Corniche, the new souq offers an air-conditioned environment for bargaining. Look for gold jewelry, watches, perfumes, electronics, embroidered linens, Bedouin silver, and traditional coffee pots.
- Marina Mall: Situated on a scenic island overlooking the Corniche, this mall has over 300 stores, a wide selection of eateries, coffee shops, and a large Carrefour supermarket. The tower at the mall offers great city views from its coffee shop with free WiFi.
- Yas Mall: Adjacent to Ferrari World on Yas Island, this is Abu Dhabi's largest mall and a global top 20 shopping destination.
Dining
You'll find a wide range of international and local cuisine in the malls and around the city. Don't miss the opportunity to experience traditional cardamom-flavored coffee. Shopping hours are generally 9 AM to 1 PM and 4 PM to 9 PM daily, with malls often open all day. Shops may close for prayers on Fridays between 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM.
Safety
Abu Dhabi is an extremely safe and clean city, with no concerns regarding crime or graffiti. However, it's important to respect local customs and dress codes. When visiting public places, avoid shorts; opt for trousers or skirts that cover the knees, and ensure shoulders and cleavage are covered. Specific dress codes apply for religious sites like the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (see Excursions for details).
Currency and Language
The local currency is the United Arab Emirates Dirham (AED), often abbreviated as dhs. The Dirham is pegged to the US Dollar, meaning its exchange rate against the USD is stable. Credit cards are widely accepted in most shops, restaurants, and malls, and ATMs are readily available throughout the city. While Arabic is the official language, English is widely spoken and understood, particularly in tourist areas and among the diverse expatriate population. Free WiFi is available at the cruise terminal, often with a password like "terminalad," and the signal can sometimes reach parts of your ship.
